Psychometric Testing and Assessment

This will consist of several assessments which will be completed online and are remotely supervised via web cam. Candidates are required to complete a series of tests to assess their cognitive abilities, problem-solving skills, and psychological suitability for a career in policing. These tests help assess whether candidates have the necessary aptitude to perform the job as a Trainee Garda.

Assessment Questionnaire
This questionnaire compiles information on your skills , abilities and preferences based on a number of statements provided to you.

Situational Judgement / Job Simulation
These scenario type questions assess how candidates react to real-life situations they may encounter while on duty as a Trainee Garda. These tests measures judgment, decision-making, and the ability to prioritize under pressure. You will be given a number of scenarios and after each scenario you must select the most appropriate course of action. You are assessed on the course of action you have selected.

Verbal Reasoning
These tests assess the ability to understand and reason with written information. You will be asked to read passages of information and  select from a range of answer that is designed to test your comprehension and analytical thinking.

Numerical Reasoning
These tests assess the ability to interpret and analyze numerical data, such as graphs, tables and calculations. Applicants need to demonstrate competency in basic maths, percentages, ratios and data interpretation.

Written exercise
The written exercise is designed to assess your ability to communicate effectively in writing and evaluate your judgement and decision-making skills in relation to a policing scenario. You will be required to critically assess information provided to you and articulate your response in writing in a structured and coherent manner. You will not have access to spelling checks, grammar checks etc.

All these tests are a very important element of the application process and are designed to evaluate your skills, personality and traits so that you can become an effective Garda. Your performance on these tests will determine your placing for the next stage of the competition which is the Competency Interview, so it is vitally important that you do well.
